How to Make Lavender Soy Wax Melts

How to Make Lavender Soy Wax Melts

Soywax is a great natural and sustainable alternative to paraffin wax. It produces long lasting candles and melts and it receives essential oils well.

Soywax melts are used with burners and tealight candles.  They are an alternative to burning essential oils in water.  Basically, the soywax acts as a carrier to the essential oil.  It's more convenient in that it's longer lasting and you don't need to remember to keep  topping up the water and it saves a great deal of essential oil.

Eventually the essential oil fades away, though, in which case you can add a few drops in your soywax on the burner.

Although I don't ordinarily colour my soy wax melts, I had a bit of fun with these.  I found a small sample packet of mica that I had been given by a friend years ago and decided to give it a go. The colour makes it interesting and pretty to look at. So you may colour yours or leave them uncoloured.

Soy wax melts are very easy to make, like the easiest thing I can make.

The first thing you need to decide on is the shape you want, you can make mini ones with those cute chocolate moulds, or biggish ones with the cupcake/muffin molds.  Heart shaped ones are pretty special too!

You can use a single EO, I love burning my lavender one in the evenings before bedtime as I find lavender extremely calming. You can also go for a more complex blend, something floral, herbal, or woody by cleverly mixing a few EO's.  Remember  if you are blending, your top notes are gonna give you the first fleeting scent, and it's your base notes that are going to 'ground' your blend, so to speak. Citrus Oils are excellent topnotes, in my opinion.

Let's get right to it:

You will need

  • 250g Soywax
  • 7.5g lavender Essential oil
  • Lavender buds (optional)
  • Mica (optional) - I used about a 1/4 teaspoon.

To Make=

  1. Heat soywax in a double boiler
  2. Once melted, add your essential oil and colour and mix well.
  3. If using buds, put a small amount in each mold cavity, then cover with a tiny bit of wax to keep them in place. Wait till solid.
  4. Pour the rest of the wax in the mold and then refrigerate immediately
  5. Keep in the fridge a few hours or overnight.
  6. Pop them out and keep at room temperature. A few hours to a day before packaging.
  7. To use
  8. Pop one in your burner and enjoy the aroma.

You need a burner and tea light candle to use.

I hope you enjoy these.  Let me know what you think!
